Kalim Oullah K. Wahedally

Chairperson

Kalim Oullah K. Wahedally is an educator, lecturer, and cultural advocate dedicated to promoting the Arabic language and heritage in Mauritius. With extensive experience in Arabic education and examination, he leads the ASU’s mission to foster linguistic excellence, cultural exchange, and educational collaboration. He holds a Master of Philosophy in Arabic Literature and is currently pursuing a PhD in Arabic Literature and Literary Criticism.

Dr. Abdool Sammad Nazeer

Vice Chairperson

Dr. Abdool Sammad Nazeer, PhD in Arabic Language, is a retired Senior Educator and Manager of Doha Academy of Tertiary Studies. A respected scholar and former Chairman of the Islamic Cultural Centre, he has represented Mauritius at international conferences on Arabic and Islamic Studies across the Middle East and Africa. He continues to promote Arabic education and intercultural understanding.

Mrs. Keenoo Sumeerah Begum

Secretary

Mrs. Keenoo Sumeerah Begum, B.A. in Arabic, has 18 years of experience in education, including 10 years in primary and several in secondary teaching. As Secretary of the ASU Board, she is dedicated to promoting Arabic language and culture and fostering meaningful, engaging learning experiences for her students.

Mr. Khaidoo Shezad

Treasurer

Mr. Khaidoo Shezad holds an M.A. in Arabic and has over 18 years of experience teaching Arabic at both primary and secondary levels. A dedicated educator, he is committed to enhancing Arabic learning and supporting cultural and linguistic enrichment through the work of the Arabic-Speaking Union.

Mrs. Rumjon Bakurally Roziabano

Assistant Secretary

Mrs. Rumjon Bakurally Roziabano is a Primary School Educator with over 25 years of experience teaching Arabic at the primary level. She is dedicated to building strong language foundations in young learners and supporting their early development. She contributes her long-standing teaching experience to the work of the Union.

Mrs. Rahezah Bibi Jumoorty

Assistant Treasurer

Mrs. Rahezah Bibi Jumoorty has served in multiple government roles, including Clerical Officer at the MOH, Arabic Teacher, and Senior Employment Officer, before becoming an Arabic Language Educator at the Ministry of Education from 2003 to date. She also lectures part-time at the MIE. With a BA in Arabic and Sociology, a PGCE, and an MA in Arabic, she contributes her broad experience to the work of the Union.

Mr. Hosany Azhar Ally

Executive Member

Mr. Hosany Azhar Ally is a Primary School Educator with 15 years of experience in the primary sector. He is committed to supporting young learners in developing strong foundations in Arabic. He brings his classroom expertise and dedication to the work of the Union.

Mr. Abd-Ashabuddin Lalla-Saib

Executive Member

Mr. Abd-Ashabuddin Lalla-Saib is an educator at Windsor College Boys’, teaching Arabic, Urdu, and Islamic Studies. He translated the Holy Qur’an into Creole and has authored around 25 Creole books on Islamic themes. He has represented Mauritius in international Qur’an reading competitions and is currently working on a French translation of the Qur’an. He brings strong scholarly expertise to the work of the Union.

Mrs. Sharmeen Akbar

Executive member (Ministry of Arts and Culture)

Mrs. Sharmeen Akbar holds qualifications in Journalism and Media Studies, Psychology, and Counselling. She has served as an Educator (2002–2012), a Family Welfare and Protection Officer (2013–2018), and is currently a Culture Officer at the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage. She brings valuable experience in education, social welfare, and cultural development to the ASU Board.

Mrs. Bolaky Bibi Rassida

Executive member (Ministry of Education & HR)

With 33 years of experience as a primary school educator and currently serving as an Assigned Assistant Supervisor. She brings long-standing classroom and supervisory experience to support the work of the Union.

Mr. Sheriad Majie

Executive member (Ministry of Finance)

Mr. Sheriad Majie, 39, is an Analyst/Senior Analyst at the Ministry of Finance, where he has served since 2015. He holds a Master of Actuarial Practice from Macquarie University and a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Mauritius. His past experience includes work at the Ministry of Housing and Lands and part-time lecturing at UoM and UTM. He provides financial and analytical expertise to the ASU Board.
